NEW WORKSHOP
Teachers and support staff will be provided with current information about teaching English language learners. An overview of Second Language Acquisition will be discussed, including the difference between Basic Interpersonal Communication skills (BICs) and Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALPS). Participants will be introduced to strategies that can be applied in the classroom to aid comprehension and language development for English learners.
Valerie Simpson has 10 years of experience in the field of ESOL. Valerie began her teaching career with the Manchester School District at Beech Street School. She also taught English Learners at Gossler Park School.
Valerie currently teaches at Londonderry Middle School. She enjoys bringing people together and has a particular interest in building the home-school-community connection for English learner families.
She resides in Londonderry, NH with her husband and two school-aged children.
Audra Lovejoy has been teaching English Learners in the Manchester School District since 2007. She has worked in several elementary schools throughout Manchester, and currently teaches as a pull-out/push-in teacher at Gossler Park School. She believes in building personal connections with students, families, and their cultures, and strives to create an environment of mutual respect and understanding in her teaching. Audra lives in Hooksett with her husband and three young children.
