Basic Employment Law: What Every Manager and Supervisor Should Know

Supervisors and managers must understand the basics of employment laws and regulations when dealing with employees, but few have received training in these areas. This workshop will look at what you need to know to avoid legal and practical issues and to meet your obligations to your employer. It also will assist you in working collaboratively with Human Resources. The workshop can also assist individuals just entering or desiring to enter the field of HR. 

The topics covered include:

  • NH and federal discrimination laws
  • Legal issues to avoid when interviewing, hiring, and discharging employees
  • How to support an employee with a disability
  • Identifying basic FMLA issues
  • Basic concepts in NH and federal wage and hour laws
  • Identifying and avoiding harassment problems

  • Amy Cann

    Amy Cann

    Amy’s career has spanned over 20 years in the Human Resources profession, and she is committed to guiding leaders to create positive, productive, safe work environments and engaging cultures for their employees while partnering to solve their challenges.

    She is currently enrolled at the Maine School of Law to complete her Juris Doctor degree with a specialization in Employment Law. Her education includes both a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership and a Master of Business Administration degree, Graduate Certificates in Human Resources Management and Social Media Marketing, and a dual Bachelor degree in Human Resources Administration and Psychology.

    Amy has designed and taught graduate, undergraduate, and professional development workshops for eight years for Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) and the University of New Hampshire (UNH), as well as led over 100 employer training sessions over the years.

    She is a Certified Senior HR Professional (SHRM-SCP) through the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM) and a Certified Safety Management Specialist (SMS) through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), a member of the NH Business and Industry Association (NH BIA) and the Chamber Collaborative of Portsmouth.

    Amy specializes in employment law, employee relations, leadership coaching, risk management, and organizational development and training.
