Basic Employment Law: What Every Manager and Supervisor Should Know

Supervisors and managers must understand the basics of employment laws and regulations when dealing with employees, but few have received training in these areas. This workshop will look at what you need to know to avoid legal and practical issues and to meet your obligations to your employers. It also will assist you in working collaboratively with Human Resources. The topics covered include NH and federal discrimination laws; legal issues to avoid when interviewing, hiring and discharging employees; how to deal with a disabled employee; identifying basic FMLA issues; basic concepts in NH and federal wage and hour laws; and identifying and avoiding harassment problems. This workshop can also assist individuals just entering or desiring to enter the field of HR. 

(This is part of the Human Resources Management Certificate Program, but you do not need to enroll in the program to take this workshop.)

  • Amy Cann

    Amy’s background includes 20 years of Human Resources & Safety experience and six years of teaching a variety of Human Resources and Business-related subjects as an Adjunct Instructor at Southern NH University and at UNH.  She has her own HR consulting firm, called Human Resources ROI, LLC, located at Pease Tradeport in Portsmouth, NH.

    Her educational background includes a MBA in Global Studies and Graduate Certificates in Human Resources Management and Social Media Marketing from Southern NH University.  Her undergraduate degree is a dual B.A. in Human Resources Administration and Psychology from Saint Leo University.  

    Amy maintains Senior HR certification through the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM) and Safety Management Specialist certification through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP). She is the Social Media Director & SHRM Foundation Chair for SHRA, an Ambassador for the Rochester Chamber of Commerce, a NH Business & Industry Association (NH BIA) HR, HealthCare, and Workforce Development Committee Member, and Board Member and Head Coach with the Rochester Youth Soccer Association (RYSA).
