The National Survey of Children's Exposure to Violence found that over 60% of children surveyed experienced some form of trauma, crime, or abuse in the prior year, with some experiencing multiple traumas. That's more than half of students in our average classroom, and while many educators are aware of the negative implications trauma has on learners, current teaching preparation programs include very little training in what to do about it.
Trauma informed practices benefits all students and can be a universal approach that's easier to implement than you think.
This workshop will provide the latest research on how trauma affects the brain and learning/behaviors so we can shift our mindset in how we're perceiving challenges, how to create a safe and trauma sensitive classroom environment to prevent triggers, and how to implement trauma informed instruction so we can best respond when challenges may arise.
This is a hands-on, collaborative, and activity based workshop so come ready to move, talk, and take home strategies you can implement tomorrow.
Sarah Sherman has been teaching students with emotional/behavioral challenges for 15 years in districts around the country from California to New Mexico to New Hampshire in grades K-8. She taught in inner city schools with many students affected by childhood trauma and their families including abuse, addiction, incarceration and gang activity. She has a Masters in Special Education, is a Nationally Board Certified Teacher, and earned a Post Graduate Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis. She also is a certified Yoga Instructor who has been teaching a Trauma Sensitive Yoga class through Haven called Empower for 3 years and has led workshops for yoga teachers on the Seacoast on trauma sensitive practices.
