Drone (sUAS) Regulation, Application, and Flight Tactics
This six hour, immersive program focuses on bridging the gap between beginner and advanced drone operation. This course will meet participants at their individual skill level and assist them in becoming a more experienced and tactical drone pilot. Whether you are looking to become a skilled recreational pilot, or continue on to commercial drone uses, this program will help you master fundamental skills that are applicable to many industries.

There are no prerequisites for this course, however beginner pilots may consider completing Introduction to UAV/UAS/ Drones prior to enrolling in the course.
Important: Participants must obtain their TRUST recreational license prior to attending this course if they would like to participate in the flight practice. This brief, free training can be accessed here.

Students do not need to bring their own drone to this course. UNH owns several drones that are available to students for hands-on exercises. Please note that this program is offered in-person and capped at 10 participants.

The first half of the day will focus on the following topics:

    •     Licensing & Registration
    •     Visual Line of Sight
    •     Altitude Restrictions
    •     Emergency Procedures
  • Pre-Flight Planning
    •     Weather
    •     LAANC
    •     Mission Specific Planning
    •     On-site Assessment
  • Controls and User Interface
    •     Remote Controller
    •     Flight Settings
    •     Flight Display
  • Camera Settings and Gimbal System
    •     Exposure
    •     Image Quality
    •     Gimbal Operation
  • Recreational vs. Commercial Use
    •     Licensing Process
    •     Drone Applications

The second half of the day will be outdoors at Boulder Field. Participants will practice various flight tactics depending on their interests. The following topics will be covered:
  • Basic Flight Tactic & Movements
  • Maintaining Control at High Speeds
  • Maintaining Control at High Altitudes
  • Scenic Manual Flight Routes
  • Scenic Automated Flight Routes
  • Multi-directional Flight (performing multiple functions at the same time)
  • Alternating between VLOS and Camera View
  • Take-off and Landing Procedures
  • Camera & Gimbal Usage while Flying
Students with the TRUST Recreational License will have the opportunity to fly a drone, working in groups of no more than 2 people per drone. Flight time will be used to practice various flying techniques.
